Product Applications
Frequently Asked Questions Fiber Jumpers:

What is Fiber Jumper?

Fiber Jumpers are an essential part of any structured cabling system. Often you will see Fiber Jumpers also referred to as Fiber Optic Patch Cords, Fiber Optic Patch Cables, or even Fiber Optic Cable Assemblies. Fiber optic jumpers are a particular length of fiber that comes with a pre-terminated LC, SC, MTRJ or ST style connector at each end. You can choose fiber jumpers with the same connector style on each end or you can choose a hybrid variety type that offers one type of connector on one end with another style on the other end. Fiber optic jumpers are also offered in both simplex fiber and duplex fiber styles. Duplex fiber is a 2 fiber jumper used for bi-directional data transfer and simplex is a single fiber used in applications that require one-way data transfer. Fiber optic jumpers are used just like regular category or UTP cable patch cords which are used to connect network equipment together in a structured cabling application. In the case of a fiber jumper you are using them to connect together fiber optic equipment.

What is the difference between Singlemode and Multimode Fiber Jumpers?

Fiber Optic jumpers usually come in either single mode or multimode type and should be selected to match the structured cabling system you are using them in. Multimode fiber optic cable has a large-diameter core that is much larger than the wavelength of light transmitted, and therefore has multiple pathways of light-several wavelengths of light are used in the fiber core. Multimode fiber optic cable can be used for most general fiber applications. Multimode fiber is commonly used for bringing fiber to the desktop, for adding segments to your existing network, or in smaller applications such as alarm systems. Multimode cable comes with two different core sizes: 50 micron or 62.5 micron. Singlemode fiber optic cable has a small core and only one pathway of light. With only a single wavelength of light passing through its core, singlemode realigns the light toward the center of the core instead of simply bouncing it off the edge of the core as with multimode. Singlemode is typically used in long-haul network connections spread out over extended areas. Again, it is important to match the fiber type of your jumpers with the fiber type used in the infrastructure of your network.
