Frequently Asked Questions About Stranded Multi-Conductor Cable:
What is a Multi-Conductor Cable?
Multi-Conductor Cable is the most commonly used cable for Security Systems, Burglar Alarms, Intercoms, PA Systems, Sound Systems, and Access Control System applications. Multi-Conductor cables contain two or more conductors with each conductor consisting of numerous strands of wires that are jacketed together to create a particular gauge of wire. Most commonly multi-conductor cables vary in size or gauge ranging from 14 AWG to 26 AWG. The thicker the gauge (AWG) of cable means the farther distance the cable can carry a signal. Multi-Conductor cables are manufactured in different types, sizes, and with different jackets depending on the low voltage application you are using the cable for. One of the most common types of multi-conductor cable is the shielded type. This is where a shielding is placed around the insulated conductors to prevent electrostatic or electromagnetic interference between the enclosed wires and external fields. Common shielding methods include braiding, drain wire, thin foil, and braided foil. The most common jacket types for multi-conductor cables are PVC and plenum rated. A PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride jacket is most commonly used and consists of a special plastic cable insulation and outer jacket. A plenum rated Jacket is a type of jacket used when installing cable in a plenum ceiling. The plenum rated or CMP jacket has special additives in the jacket material that make it flame-retardant to meet plenum specifications.
In what applications is Multi-Conductor Cable used?
Multi-Conductor Cable is the most diverse low voltage cable available. It can be purchased in numerous configurations to support almost any low voltage application. In security applications multi-conductor cable can be used to power sensors, motion detectors, window contacts, door contacts, keypads, or be used to even power security cameras. In access control applications it can be used to power locks, control door strikes and readers, and power all the access control components. Multi-Conductor Cables can be used in any low voltage applications to power almost any equipment.
