Frequently Asked Questions About Voice & Data Jacks:

What is a Voice and Data Jack?

A twisted pair cable jack is commonly used in local area networks (LANs) and is a female connector used in voice and/or data communications. Depending on the cable you are using and the connection you are trying to create you may use a Cat 5e, Cat 6, RJ45, or RJ11 voice jack to bring connectivity to the equipment you are trying to put on your network. The two most common cables used for a network installation are Category or UTP cables like Cat 5e and Cat 6. Keep in mind you will need the jack to match the cable so if you are using Cat 6 cable be sure to match the cable with a Cat 6 jack. The most common use is to terminate your voice or data jack and then snap it into a wall or faceplate that mounts to the wall so you can later connect your cable from the jack to your network or telephone equipment.

How do you install a Cabling Jack?

In order to terminate the jack to your cable you will need a category cable stripper to prepare the cable and then a punch down tool to actually terminate the cable to the jack. The jacks will have a color code diagram on them to follow that will ensure you terminate the cable to the jack properly. Also available are shielded Cat 5e and Cat 6 cable jacks to use with shielded category cable if necessary. Once you line up the proper color codes on the jack with the cable you will simply punch down the cable using your punch down tool. A quality punch down tool will punch down the cable and cut the access cable all in one motion.

Should I use Cat 5e or Cat 6 Jacks?

There is a huge surge of people now using Cat6 over Cat 5e for their voice and data networks. Cat6 is a thicker gauge cable which allows faster speed with a higher bandwidth than Cat 5e. But the bottom line is if you are using Cat 6 cable you need to use cat 6 jacks. If you are using Cat 5e cable then you need to use Cat 5e jack.

How do you test a Cabling Jack?

Many Do It Yourselfer’s just install a jack and then plug it in to see if it works. Voice and data jacks are easy to work on so if it does not work you can easily evaluate it to ensure you punched it down correctly. If you are a professional installer and you are installing many voice and data jacks there are numerous UTP tester options to choose from. You can choose a tester that range from $40 to $1000’s of dollars depending on your needs. Some UTP testers just give you simple electronic results where others print test results so you can provide your customer certification results of your installation.
