Frequently Asked Questions About Security Digital Video Recorders (DVR):
What is a Security Digital Video Recorder (DVR)?
A Security Digital Video Recorder or DVR is the most effective device used to record, play, and view surveillance video. The DVR uses a hard drive to store video (like a computer) which means there are no tapes or cassettes to load. Most DVR’s come with channels that you simply plug security cameras into via a BNC connection. Most DVR’s are packaged in 4, 8, 16, and 32 channel configurations. The number of channels equals the number of security cameras you can connect to the DVR. You will also notice when choosing a security video recorder you can choose the size of your hard drive. Most DVR manufactures offer recorders with hard drive sizes ranging from 160 Gigabytes up to 5 Terabytes. You get to choose the size of the hard drive you need depending on the how much continuous recording time you want to save on the hard drive. Other options you will see with DVR’s are audio outputs, images per second (IPS) frame rates, monitor connection options, and network connection. Most quality DVR’s can be plugged right into a router so you can view your surveillance video from any computer, iPhone, or Blackberry in the world.
How do I choose A Security Digital Video Recorder (DVR)?
Choosing a DVR for your surveillance needs could be a very difficult task. There are so many options to choose from depending on the simplicity or complexity of your security video application. Plus not all DVR’s are made equally! Although most DVR’s have the same basic functionality some are made better than others and offer stronger warranties, easier to use software, and more flexibility to perform the applications you need. The number one criteria to look at when picking a DVR is the warranty! There are 1000’s of importers saturating the US surveillance market with low cost cheap DVR’s only offering a one year warranty. The reality is that you are dealing with electronics and there is a good chance that after a year that DVR you invested in will no longer work. So at CableGiant we recommend choosing a DVR that is manufactured by a quality company that will stand by their products by offering at least a 3 year warranty. Minimum!
Basic things you need to know about Security Digital Video Recorders?
Most quality surveillance DVR’s use only BNC connections to attach the cameras to the DVR. Meaning you will have to terminate your coaxial cable with a BNC connector to attach your cameras to the DVR or you will have to buy pre-terminated cables. Either way you need the BNC connection. A DVR will also give you an output to attach a monitor. This is the area you need to be smart about. Most cheap or inexpensive DVR’s save money by only giving you a BNC output for a monitor where most quality DVR’s give you a VGA output. The issue is how many people own a monitor that is connected via BNC? The only people that have a BNC monitor are people that spend big dollars on a security monitor which is most commonly a medium to large size business. Another aspect of a DVR you should understand is the amount of space you need or how large of a hard drive you need? For small business or residential installations you can get by with a small hard drive that is 250 Gigabytes. The reality is that unless you are a medium to large business you can set the cameras up on motion through the DVR so you are not wasting your hard drive recording dark or empty space. You can set your DVR to record motion only at night which will heavily increase the amount of continuous video you can record. Once your hard drive is full it then starts recording over itself. But the reality is that if something happens and you need to pull the security video you should know within a couple of weeks. There are many factors that play a part in choosing the size of your hard drive. Those factors include the resolution of your cameras, the images per second (IPS) rate you are recording at, and how much continuous video you want to keep. You do have options when it comes to storing past recorded video. Most quality DVR’s offer a DVD drive or a USB port which can be used to download video and save it.
