Frequently Asked Questions About CCTV Camera Power Supplies:

What is a CCTV Camera Power Supply?

Choosing the right power supply to power your security cameras is the most important and most overlooked aspect of building a successful security camera system. Regardless if you are installing traditional analog CCTV cameras or the new IP cameras available, the bottom line is you need to get power to your cameras. For security cameras you can choose from a single output one camera power supply to a multi-camera power supply that allows you to power up to 32 cameras from a single distribution box. Most security camera power supplies come in 1, 4, 8, 16, and 32 camera configurations. Power supplies are also offered with different power output strengths, along with the option of AC or DC voltage types. Power supplies are available in lockable metal housings that you can wall mount, or you can go with a cleaner look and choose a rack-mountable power supply. Also, available are dual voltage power supplies that allow you to run DC and AC power from the same board. So you can have half of your cameras AC and the other half DC.

How do I determine what Power Supply I need?

The key to determining what power supply you need is to understand how much and what type of voltage your security cameras need. Most security cameras come in either AC or DC voltage type requirements. Also, each camera has its own power voltage requirement to function. Many of the newer better quality security cameras available today have the ability to be dual voltage so you can power them with either DC or AC. After you determine what type of voltage your camera needs you now need to determine how much power it needs. All security cameras should come with a specification sheet that explains the amount of power that the camera requires to operate. If you have cameras with Infrared LED’s on them remember that you need to take into account the power requirement of the camera at night when the LED’s are on. This is because at night the LED’s kick on and now the camera is using sometimes twice the amount of power than it does during the day. If the camera does not have enough power when the LED’s turn on you will not have any light and you will simply get a black screen.

So what does it all mean?

Each security camera power supply will properly document the number of outputs, the type of voltage, and the voltage strength offered per channel. No matter if you are installing traditional CCTV cameras or IP cameras put some serious thought into what you need to power your system. Look at the each cameras power requirements along with the location you will actually place the power supply. If you need assistance on picking the right security camera power supply for your project call CableGiant and let a technical advisor assist you in making your surveillance project a complete success!
