Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Voice & Data Modular Plugs:
What is a Voice and Data Modular Plugs?
A Voice and Data Modular Plug is a traditional connector used for terminating cables in both telephone and data applications. These modular plus are most commonly used to terminate a connector or a plug at the end of a category cable such as Cat 5e, Cat 6, or telephone cable. Most commonly you will see people call these modular plugs other names like Voice and Data Connectors, RJ-45 Plugs, RJ-11 Plugs, RJ-12 Plugs, Patch Cable Ends, or RJ-45 Connectors. When terminating a cable with a modular plug you may also do so using a Strain Relief which is protective sleeve that crimps onto the cable with the modular plug and assists in protecting the termination from environmental conditions such as moisture or dust in the air. The strain relief also strengthens the connection between the cable and the modular plug which is often needed if the cable is installed in an area where it is constantly pulled on or constantly moved. Terminating a network or telephone cable is a common task in installing IP Cameras, Home Theater Systems, Structured Cabling Networks, Phone Systems, or Building Custom Patch Cables.
What tools do I need to terminate a Modular Plug?
In order to terminate a network cable with a Modular Plug you will need a Category Cable Stripper, a Modular Plug Crimp Tool, and a simple UTP Cable Cutter.
What Modular Plug Connectors do I need?
When terminating a Modular Plug to your cable you need to make sure you match the plug to the cable you are using. Depending on your application you may be using flat stranded cable or round solid cable. These cables most likely will be in the form of telephone line cord, Cat 5e, or Cat 6. All cable types use a particular modular plug that is designed to fit that type of cable and the connection you are trying to create for your components like patch panels, servers, routers, telephone systems, IP Cameras, or other electronic equipment. Most commonly flat telephone cable or flat category cable is used for patch cables where the round solid cable is used for in-wall installation or even long cable runs. The stranded flat cable does not carry a signal long distances due to signal loss. Stranded cable is constructed of several small gauge wires each in a separate insulation sleeve. Stranded cable is more flexible, making it more suitable for shorter distances, such as patch cords. Once you have identified the cable you are using in your installation it is easy to now pick the modular plugs that fit that cable.
What Modular Plugs and Crimp Tools does CableGiant offer?
At CableGiant we offer all the Modular Plugs, Cable Preparation Tools, and Crimp Tools to make any installation successful. We offer traditional RJ-22, RJ-11, RJ-12, and RJ-45 modular plugs to support both round solid and flat stranded cables. Our traditional style modular plugs are perfect to use in terminating cables in both telephone and data applications. They are all manufactured to comply with FCC 68 guidelines and are UL listed. Our modular plugs offer multiple position & multiple contact configuration styles for round and flat cables with (2) or (3) conductor contacts. All of our modular plugs have gold plated contacts that provide reliable performance and long life. We also offer easy to use All-in-One Modular Plug Crimp Tools that will allow you to terminate RJ45, RJ11, RJ12 & RJ22 (Handset) modular plugs with one simple tool.
CableGiant is also proud to now offer the new Platinum Tools EZ-RJPO System. The patented EZ-RJPRO System is a revolutionary system that offers a crimp tool, strain reliefs, and RJ45 Cat 5e, Cat 6, and RJ11/12 connector plugs that simplify twisted pair terminations by allowing the wires to be inserted through the connector and out the front. This allows the technician to easily verify the proper wiring order before crimping. The EZ-RJ connectors also work with both stranded and solid cables so one connector plug does it all. The EZ-RJPRO System is the easiest and fastest way to terminate a cable with a modular plug.
